La famiglia è stata proposta dalla mwhgclassificazione APG II (2003) che la attribuisce all'mwhwordine delle mwiaAsparagali, assegnandovi piante che la mwiqclassificazione tradizionale collocava nelle mwigLiliaceae o nelle Aloeaceae.cite-ref-3[3]

La mwkqclassificazione APG III (2009) ha rimesso in discussione la validità di questo raggruppamento, incorporandolo nella famiglia mwkgXanthorrhoeaceae, mwkwsottofamiglia mwlaAsphodeloideae.cite-ref-apgiii-4-0[4]

La mwmgclassificazione APG IV ha ristabilito la priorità della denominazione Asphodelaceae rispetto a Xanthorrhoeaceae, rinominando pertanto la famiglia in tal senso.cite-ref-apgiv-5-0[5]
